Elections:
Local Municipality Elections Vienna 2005
October 23, 2005 • Vienna, Austria

The third elections of this intensive campaign fall in Austria brought the fourth victory for the opposition leader SPÖ, the Social Democratic Party of Austria. After the landslide victory of the Social Democrats in Styria, totally changing the regional landscape and enabling the first Social Democratic governor since 1945 and the confirmation of the leadership of the SPÖ in the region of Burgenland, the Party saw another great victory on the 23rd in Vienna.
In the following please find some interesting data provided by SORA.

The Social Democrats (SPÖ) do not reach an absolute majority of votes: they receive 49% of the votes. However, they will remain in possession of the absolute majority of mandates in the city council, where they now hold 55 of 100 seats. The conservative People´s Party (ÖVP) obtains 18.8% of the votes and thus, with a plus of 8,147 absolute votes, becomes second strongest party in Vienna. The Freedom Party (FPÖ) loses 5.3 percentage points and receives 14.9% of the vote. They are closely followed by the Greens, who obtain 14.7% of the vote and thus rank forth. The Greens managed to obtain 9,000 votes more than in the last municipal elections in 2001 (that is a plus of 2.2%). The general voter turnout has decreased in comparison with the 2001 elections and now amounts to 59.98%.
