Spain:
Parliamentary Election Date Set
Spain will hold parliamentary elections on March 9, Prime Minister José
Luis Rodríguez Zapatero said. He said that he would dissolve the
current Parliament on Jan. 14 and that the election campaign would start
on Feb. 22.
Both main political parties in Spain, PSOE (socialist) and PP (popular-conservative),
agreed to organize two TV-debates between their candidates, José
Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (PSOE) and Mariano Rajoy (PP), on Feb.
25 and on March 3. These will be the first TV-debates between presidential
candidates in Spain in 15 years since the last one was in 1993 between
former President Felipe Gonzalez and, at that time, candidate José
María Aznar who was President between 1996 and 2004. In 1996, 2000
and 2004 Parliamentary Elections there were no TV-debates between main
candidates.
